Resurrection Catholic School
Resurrection Catholic School is a school of academic excellence. The reputation our school enjoys comes from the efforts and hard work of many people. This community effort led to the winning of the 2004 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School award.
All academic programs of Resurrection Catholic School are governed and evaluated by the Diocese of Orlando and the Florida Catholic Conference.
Primary Grades
The elementary school is divided into two learning teams. Students in grades K-2 make up the primary team and students in grades 3-5 are considered intermediate. Best educational practices are implemented according to the age and curriculum goals of each group.
The primary students learn by doing with lesson objectives embedded in child-friendly themes. The phonics-based reading program stresses vocabulary, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and fluency for the emerging reader. Above average spelling and written and oral communication skills are also expected outcomes of our primary language arts program. Spanish instruction begins in the first grade.
The first grade religion curriculum introduces students to God's beautiful world and the special people in their lives. Second grade students receive instruction in the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation. The Benzinger Family Life program augments the Sadlier We Believe sacramental and religion programs. All students learn the traditional prayers of the Catholic Church. We place emphasis on the liturgical calendar and the Mass to round out the primary students' formal introduction to the Catholic faith.
The primary science program is a hands-on program built around the three branches of science: life, physical, and earth/space science. Learning about living things, magnets, weather, rocks and good health practices are part of the first grade experience. Second graders focus on prehistoric life, properties of matter, light, the interaction of living things with the earth, and the scientific method.
The social studies curriculum introduces the young students to maps, symbols, and graphic aids. Good citizenship and the American culture and heritage are emphasized through group projects and interactive activities, as well as whole group instruction.
An understanding of ordinal numbers, fractions, geometric shapes, money and measurement are part of the mathematics program. Critical thinking skills and problem solving opportunities are presented on a daily basis. A variety of resources and manipulatives are available to increase student learning in the area of mathematics. These materials are readily available to the classroom teachers. Science, religion, math, and social studies are often integrated with other subject areas.
Intermediate Grades
The intermediate students, Gr. 3-5, are exposed to team teaching and study religion, reading, math, social studies, science, spelling, English, Spanish and handwriting. The technology applications administrator introduces keyboarding to the fourth graders. Fifth graders advance to word processing, Power Point, and drawing programs during the course of the year. Art, music, library, and physical education are scheduled throughout the week.
Middle School
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades are organized into six homerooms in the middle school building. The building was designed to meet the needs of the young adolescent.
The departmentalized curriculum includes Religion, Math, Social Studies, Science, Literature, Spanish and English. These classes meet four or five days per week and adhere to the diocesan requirement for instructional minutes. Physical education and Spanish meet throughout the week as well.
The ENCORE elective program (Gr. 7-8) introduces the students to a wide variety of high interest classes divided into three areas: fine arts, personal wellbeing, and communication/self-help. The ENCORE classes meet three periods per week and allow the student the freedom to choose 4 classes a year. Classes available to the students are: art, musical drama, newspaper, literary magazine, Math Counts, life skills, personal assisted learning, basketball, golf, technology classes, public speaking, make and take, scrapbooking, and e-team. Students in Grade 6 participate in an abbreviated elective program, which meets two periods per week. Study skills, health, art and music are the four classes offered to the sixth grade students.
An Advisory Program is part of the middle school experience. Students are divided into small groups (12-15 students) by grade for five advisory periods per week. An advisor (administrators, teachers, and special area teachers) is assigned to each group. One day during the week the students are assigned to a "soaring eagle" group, which consists of all three grade levels.
Stewardship
Resurrection Catholic School is committed to stewardship as a way of life. Stewardship is taught and modeled as a response to Jesus' invitation to follow Him. Each family, faculty member and student is asked to share their unique gifts of time, talent and treasure to carry out Christ's work in our parish, school and community.
School parents are asked to volunteer time and talent for the betterment of the school, parish and community. Recognizing the uniqueness of each individual a wide variety of opportunities exist for service. Opportunities include: chaperoning student events, grounds and facilities maintenance, fund raising, assisting in the classrooms, managing the weekly courier envelope, organizing the Gift Catalog, working in the sports program, including Athletic Booster Club membership, library committee activities, Home School Association projects, and Board of Education membership. Seasonal opportunities include Mardi Gras, Trunk or Treat, annual gift wrap sale, Rezzapallozza, golf tournament, Christmas program, First Communion Brunch, Graduation Recognition Day, Catholic Schools Week, and teacher appreciation events.
